Outside of Alpha Phi

  • Many of our sisters of the Delta Upsilon chapter have been very successful not only within our sorority, but outside of it as well. We take pride in our high level of involvement around campus and in the community. Below are a few sisters who have recently been involved in activities outside of Alpha Phi and a brief description of their experiences:

I am a firm believer that actual real world experience is the best thing to prepare you for the real world, so I started interning summer before my freshman year of college.  I worked for Sherwin-Williams at their headquarters in downtown Cleveland for two summers.  They had me in marketing/communications my first summer there and then print media my second summer.  These experiences helped me decide I would be a marketing minor.

After sophomore year I interned with Good Morning Cleveland at NewsChannel5, the Cleveland ABC affiliate.  My hours were a killer (2am-9am), but the experience was so worth it in the end.  I was writing scripts and editing video for the air, and I compiled an entire resume reel by the end of the summer.  I also got to go out with reporters almost every day, and we covered everything from shootings to LeBron's free agency.

Now, summer after junior year, I am interning with WTOL 11 in Toledo, the CBS affiliate in Toledo.  Not only do I get to do the same sorts of jobs that I did last year, but I also am actually conducting interviews with prominent local people in the Toledo area and making packages on the stories.  It's very hands on.  Plus, I met an Baldwin-Wallace Alpha Phi alumna who is a reporter there!  Alpha Phi is a great connection in any internship setting and definitely not something to be taken for granted. :)

I had an internship at a small financial firm in Strongsville, Ohio. I transferred small portfolios of clients to third-party money managers.  I also helped with client relations. This was a great internship, introducing me to one aspect of the finance industry and I gained a lot of valuable experience!

I am an intern at the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northeast Ohio. At Make-A-Wish, we grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.  As the development intern, I have had the opportunity to coordinate the volunteers for their biggest fundraising event, Walk for Wishes.  Also, I have created a flyer for a campaign the foundation is doing which will be sent to our head marketing department to be reviewed and hopefully published.  This internship has been such a rewarding and amazing experience!

I was the Marketing Intern at PlayhouseSquare in spring 2011. Through this internship I learned a lot about media buying and promotions while working closely with the various broadway shows and performances that were visiting the Cleveland area. I assisted with press nights and press reviews as well as took cast members to interviews with stations such as Cleveland Fox 8. This internship was a great way to network in Cleveland and work with multiple media outlets!

Being a student assistant coach has not only helped me to pay for my tuition, but it has also taught me a lot about being a coach, as well as many other life lessons. From the long hours of practice to the long bus rides, I have seen and experienced much more than than other students working a typical work study job. I went into the job thinking it was going to be a great opportunity and came out with not only that but also another family. I am so blessed to not only have my sisters of Alpha Phi, but also to have the finest young women in the OAC to call my family.
